Influencing Late Effects of Anticancer Treatment

Although anticancer treatment, especially in younger individuals, can lead to remission of the tumor on the one hand, it can also lead to damage to certain tissues and organs that only becomes apparent with the passage of time. For example, it has been shown that treatment with adriamycin, doxorubicin, and other chemotherapeutic agents, as well as other treatment modalities, can be cardiotoxic and, in the long term, lead, for example, to the development of heart failure (Morelli et al. 2022). It is questionable how procedures interfering with neurotumor interactions may affect such late sequelae of anticancer treatment. For example, clinical trials are currently underway in which patients treated with adriamycin, for example, are also given propranolol, which affects, among other things, cardiomyocyte function (Hopson et al. 2021).
