Artificial Intelligence for Medical Image Analysis: An Opportunity for Automation

This chapter explores the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in medical image analysis, leveraging the abundance of medical imaging data. As technology advances, AI/ML applications are successfully employed in radiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, and gastroenterology. The benefits include early disease detection, personalized treatment planning, and real-time assistance during surgical interventions. However, challenges such as standardizing data collection, addressing biases and ensuring transparency must be tackled. Despite hurdles, the potential for AI/ML to enhance healthcare efficiency, patient outcomes, and clinician productivity is substantial.
