The Roots of American Exceptionalism

American exceptionalism is the conviction that the United States is a nation that surpasses all others. In John Winthrop’s famous words, America is “a city on a hill” that is an example to the world. What is the source of this fervent conviction? And, what are its political implications? This chapter provides a critical evaluation of the theological foundations of American exceptionalism in covenant theology, manifest destiny, and the millennium. Together these ideas make up what has been called America’s “civil religion.” They explain why America could not resist being swept up in the euphoria at the end of the Cold War, which was a golden opportunity to realize her destiny as a world transformative power.
