Modern Aspects of Communication for Pedagogic Knowledge and Skills Development in Human Kinetics, Sports and Health Education Students in Lagos State University, Lagos, Nigeria

This study investigated modern aspects of communication for teaching Drug Use and Abuse in Sports in Lagos State University, Lagos, Nigeria. Specifically, the study attempted to: find out if there is a significant difference in the academic achievement of students in Drug Use and Abuse in Sports in Lagos State University when taught using Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) and Traditional method of teaching; and assess the statistical significant difference (if any) between the academic performance of male and female students in Lagos State University when taught Drug Use and Abuse in Sports course using Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI). Basic Teaching Achievement Test (BTAT); Questionnaire; and Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) package were utilized to collect data for analysis in this study. Data from the survey involving 87 students were analyzed. The two hypotheses raised were tested, using descriptive approaches. The study found that there existed a significant difference in the academic achievement of students in Lagos State University taught using CAI and Traditional method of teaching with t (85) = 12.436, ρ < 0.001 at 95% CI of the Mean Difference [5.38, 7.43] with a Glass’ delta, δ = 2.214. In addition, the study revealed that there existed a significant statistical difference between the academic performance of the male and female students in Lagos State University taught using CAI, t (42) = 0.666, ρ = 0.509 at 95% CI of the Mean Difference [−0.74, 1.47] with a Glass’ delta, δ = 0.214. The study concluded that adopting CAI to deliver pedagogy in Drug Use and Abuse in Sport in Lagos State University, Lagos, Nigeria enhanced academic performance of the students in the course. By extension, using the same technique in teaching the course is capable of making a great difference in curbing drug use and abuse among Nigerian youths. The study recommended that government, universities and academics must invest in computer facilities and infrastructures; universities must facilitate continuous seminars and workshops for lecturers on the use of computer to present animations, produce assessment sheets and teach instructional contents in all academic programmes; and universities should romance all internet providers in the country to provide internet that will be seamlessly accessible to and utilized by the academics in the course of their pedagogic knowledge and skills development delivery.
