Motor-Skill Memory

This chapter explains the theory of Generalized Motor Programs (GMPs), which first defined the concept of motor-skill learning. It still serves as an important backdrop for modern research. When people create motor-skill memories, a central control system, a GMP, stores information for movements that are similar—that belong to a class of motions, such as throwing a ball. A generalized motor program abstracts information about similar movements to build strong, flexible motor-skill learning. A recall schema enables us to perform instances of our movements. Musicians build GMPs at varying hierarchical levels, i.e., for playing scales, playing a piece of music, or knowing how to play an instrument. It is critical that musicians learn to improve and optimize motor skill by employing variable practice.
