Recent Advancements in Graphene-based Photocatalyst for Water Splitting

Developing sustainable energy sources has been crucial in reducing environmental impacts caused by fossil fuel consumption. Production of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas by water splitting utilizing sunlight is one of the promising methods, and it requires photocatalysts to facilitate the reaction. Graphene-based photocatalysts have gained a lot of attention as they have unique properties in the field of electronics and optics, making them ideal for being the catalyst for photocatalytic water splitting. This section examines the latest progress in creating and producing photocatalysts rooted in graphene, aimed at facilitating the process of water splitting by using solar power. The initial section covers the basic principles of photocatalysis and the division of H2O into H2 and O2 through stimulation of light. Subsequently, an exploration of the benefits and obstacles tied to the utilization of graphene-based substances in the realm of photocatalysis ensues. The latest studies in the field of photocatalytic water splitting having graphene-based catalysts are reviewed, including their performance in terms of hydrogen and oxygen production, stability, and durability. Overall, this chapter offers an overview of the current status of graphene-based catalysts for photocatalytic water splitting, highlighting their potential as potent material for sustainable energy production.
