摘要

Contact lenses (CL) are commonly used to correct refractive troubles, aphakia, keratoconus, irregular cornea, anisometropia, in the management of dry eye, after corneal or crystalline refractive surgery, in relapsing epithelial erosion syndrome, for therapeutical reasons and for cosmetic purposes (common). Although the CL wear offers a number of advantages, their inappropriate use can generate complications that sometimes require stopping wearing them. Generally, CL are divided into two main groups, depending on the type of material rigid CL and soft CL, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Contact lens complications are represented by discomfort related to contact lens wear, corneal neovascularisation, keratitis related to CL wear (peripheral keratitis, microbial keratitis, keratitis with Acanthamoeba, fungal keratitis), giganto-papillary conjunctivitis, arcuate superior epithelial lesion, corneal edema, deposits, contact lens damage.Therapeutical contact lenses are indicated for pain relievers, healing purposes, hydration purposes, for protective reasons, rehabilitation after eye surgery, for support purposes and for delivering drugs. Orthokeratology is an alternative method of temporary correction of refractive errors by modifying the curvature of the cornea. Modern orthokeratology uses lenses made of rigid materials with reverse geometry for a better modification of the corneal shape. Myopia is the most frequent indication of orthokeratology lenses. By providing good vision without correction during the day, it has become a particularly popular corrective alternative among children.
