Bacterial Sialadenitis

Bacterial infections of the salivary gland are caused by a variety of conditions across age groups. These infections are often due to decreased salivary flow or production, with or without obstruction, in the setting of an ascending bacterial contamination from the oral cavity. This chapter discusses the risk factors for bacterial sialadenitis, the different presentations of acute, chronic and recurrent infections, and entities such as juvenile recurrent parotitis, neonatal parotitis, and parotid abscess.
