Migration is a global phenomenon and involves transnational processes on large scales. However, processes of integration and inclusion, as well as segregation and exclusion, happen on smaller scale: they unfold on the ground, on a local level. Migrancy—the experience of living with migration and transnationality—takes place in the home, schools, workplaces, and institutions. It takes place in everyday life. It takes place in the neighbourhood. Integration—the process through which new members find their way into society—is very often not a conscious effort, but simply forms of everyday interaction on the part of migrants and non-migrants alike. When explicit efforts take place to bond newcomers with receiving communities and vice versa, they typically take place in the local, among neighbours. For this reason, the local and the local neighbourhood have been important themes for doing research on food, integration, and belonging.
