Out of our fieldwork among immigrants in the Bordeaux Metropolis, from the conversations we had, our participation, and observations, in different places and times, emerged the notion of “accidental communities”. What do we mean by using these two words together while they seem to be in opposition? How can food shed light on the ways in which a plurality of people forms an accidental community? How can food be a tool that people seize to create an “in-common” and constitute a community despite the accidental nature of their meeting? How, in parallel, can hierarchical social relationships, where power relations are wielded, arise within an accidental community, and how can food enable us to analyse them?
