Kitchens and dinner tables are magical places. Located at the heart of homes and family lives across the world, they offer a space to share experiences, tell one’s stories and have them heard. This chapter sets out to introduce the mission of Über den Tellerrand, a non-governmental organization mainly based in Germany, which aims to connect people of different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds through events of encounter at the kitchen table. The chapter elaborates on why and how food becomes a vehicle for social cohesion and what frames fruitful encounter, while also reflecting on the effects and limitations of an encounter-based approach when it comes to power dynamics and privilege.
