In today’s era the internet has become an aspect of our lives no longer considered a luxury but rather a necessity. It plays a role, in education, work, socializing and accessing information. Ensuring internet access is crucial in achieving development goals as it opens-up significant opportunities for economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. To begin with the internet offers possibilities for growth and job creation. It allows small businesses to expand their reach to markets while providing entrepreneurs with resources and information. Additionally, by enabling work options the internet reduces commuting time and associated emissions while increasing productivity. This contributes to growth and helps alleviate poverty—a crucial objective of sustainable development. Furthermore, universal access to the internet promotes inclusion. Helps reduce inequality. In areas individuals can access educational resources and healthcare services through online platforms. Moreover, people with disabilities can actively participate in society by utilizing platforms that cater to their needs. Social media also provides marginalized groups with an avenue to connect with others and share their perspectives—ultimately fostering diverse and inclusive societies. Lastly the internet plays a role in preservation by facilitating sustainable practices. For instance, through grids and energy management systems integrated into our infrastructure we can effectively reduce energy consumption. Similarly beneficial are precision agriculture techniques that optimize water usage and minimize fertilizer requirements. In summary the internet is a tool, for achieving development goals as it fuels economic growth promotes social inclusivity and encourages environmentally friendly practices. The internet also allows for the exchange of information and knowledge regarding practices, including energy and models promoting a circular economy. The United Nations acknowledges the significance of ensuring that everyone has access, to the internet and recognizes its potential in promoting development. Goal 9 of the UNs Development Goals (SDGs) emphasizes the need to establish infrastructure encourage inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. As part of this goal there is a target to “substantially increase access to information and communications technology and strive for affordable internet access in countries”. However, there are challenges associated with achieving internet access. These challenges include bridging infrastructure gaps ensuring affordability and promoting literacy. It is crucial for governments, private sectors and civil society to collaborate in order to address these obstacles effectively and ensure that everyone can avail themselves of the opportunities offered by the internet. In conclusion attaining internet access plays a role in accomplishing sustainable development goals as it opens-up avenues for economic growth, social inclusivity and environmental preservation. Nevertheless, it is imperative that we overcome these challenges together so that all individuals can benefit from these opportunities. Through efforts we can build a future that is more sustainable and equitable, for everyone.
