Anaerobic Co-digestion of Cassava Peel Residue: A Review of Potential Co-substrates Pre-treatment and Operating Factors for Improved Methane Yield

Researchers are increasingly turning to alternative energy sources due to global concerns over issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, and rising crude oil prices. However many countries are still facing limitations when it comes to clean energy sources. Fortunately biogas is a renewable and economically feasible alternative to fossil fuels for generating energy and heat. Biochemical processes such as anaerobic digestion can be used to generate biogas from organic waste. However low nutrient levels can hinder this process making co-digestion a viable option. This review summarizes recent studies on anaerobic co-digestion (ACD) of cassava peel residue (CPR) with other substrates to identify the most effective combination for achieving high-quality biogas yields. Additionally it outlines the factors that influence the co-digestion process. This review aims to identify the best potential co-substrate for cassava peel residues’ anaerobic co-digestion and provide a recommendation for future reference.
