Amsterdam: John Benjamins, 2008) tries to explain this asymmetry between OV and VO languages in terms of three performance factors. Kuwana and Tokizaki (The ordering of obliques and adpositional elements. Proceedings of the Linguistic Society of America 8 (1) https://doi.org/10.3765/plsa.v8i1.5495 , 2023) argue that the possible and impossible orders of O, X, and V can be explained just by domain size for constituent recognition. However, neither of these studies discuss what kind of OV languages have each of the orders XOV, OXV, and OVX and why they have their specific order. In this chapter, we focus on aspects of the case marking of object in each word order type. We argue that most OV languages have case marking on the dependent or on the head. Case marker in OV languages helps readers and listeners to interpret the object even if the object is not adjacent to the verb. On the other hand, most VO languages have no case marking. They have to rely on VO adjacency in order to help readers and listeners to interpret the object.
