Modeling and Analysis of Mechanical Work of Breathing

Sleep disorders and respiratory diseases are often intertwined, with conditions like obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea disrupting sleep patterns and asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease impacting sleep quality and continuity. A common thread among these disorders is an increase in the work of breathing (WoB), the energy expended by the respiratory muscles to move air in and out of the lungs. This increased effort can lead to fragmented sleep stages, decreased oxygen levels, and microarousals, all of which disrupt normal sleep patterns and contribute to poor sleep quality. Understanding and effectively managing respiratory work in sleep disorders is crucial for improving treatment strategies and sleep quality for individuals suffering from these conditions. This chapter aims to provide an overview of the fundamentals of WoB measurements and interpretation, focusing on two key methods: pressure analysis and airflow analysis. By examining how these methods quantify and assess WoB, we equip researchers and clinicians with the necessary knowledge to evaluate and manage respiratory work effectively, paving the way for better sleep and improved health outcomes.
