SPIs Between Theory and Practice: Which Way Forward?

As shown in this book, the “SPI topic” can be addressed from both a theoretical and a practical perspective. Although social science research on SPI(s) seeks to bring these two perspectives together, theory and practice usually occupy separate spheres. The aim of this chapter is to bring these two spheres closer to each other. By this, I do not mean conducting the analytical exercise—typical of the social science researcher—of linking theoretical concepts to empirical evidence. Instead, I intend to explore pathways and strategies that could lead to an enhanced and constructive dialogue between SPI theorists and practitioners. I consider that such an exchange could be beneficial not only to broaden both communities’ horizon but also to stimulate collective reflections on the “way forward” for SPI(s). This chapter is divided into three parts: the first section focuses on the idea that SPI(s) could be about bridging not only science and policy, but also theory and practice; the second section critically discusses if SPIs are really needed, considering whether there are alternatives to them; and the final section discusses the role and relevance of SPI research.
