Dilemmas of L2 Identity in Globalisation and the Hegelian Solution of Morality

This chapter discusses four dilemmas of L2 identity in the context of globalisation raised by Giddens (The discourse reader. Routledge, London, 2006). According to Giddens (2006), globalisation has exerted a force for unification with other parts of the world for self-identity while simultaneously raising concerns for self-preservation. Secondly, individuals feel powerless in the globalised context due to a lack of control. However, globalisation has posed new opportunities and resources for individuals to appropriate and re-appropriate resources for their life circumstances. Thirdly, globalisation has resulted in the demise of authority and religion and resulted in uncertainties caused by a plurality of authorities. Finally, commodification has resulted in personalised consumption made up of standardised products, which causes pathological over-individualisation of consumption. Hegel emphasises pure duty, and more importantly, its actualisation in his anthro-political philosophy. Hegelian morality is proposed to empower individuals in resolving the tensions in these four dilemmas. This is achieved by using English as a lingua franca in interacting with others from different parts of the globe and inculcating a globalised L2 identity.
