In this chapter, the concept of procurement is first introduced, covering its evolution and terminology differences. It then emphasises the main areas of managing resources, the responsibilities of a procurement team, and how it acts as a boundary-spanning functionboundary-spanning functionBoundary-spanning function. Considering the role of “humans” in procurement, the chapter highlights some skills and competencies. Additionally, it reflects on service supply chain professionals and the relation between service procurement and procurement in the service supply chain.
