The Rise of Humanized Mouse Models

In this chapter, we present our view on immunity and approaches to studying interactions between the lymphatic and nervous systems. Cooperation between the two systems plays a fundamental role in health and disease. Recent advances in xenobiology have paved the way for new approaches to studying the relationships between immunity and nervous system homeostasis, response to injuries, and disease in animal models. Humanized animal models help explore the complexity of human immune system development and adaptive immune responses. Humanizing a mouse brain with human glial cells provides an additional tool to study hematolymphoid brain interactions in small animals. Humanized mouse models are the driving forces and workhorses of studying neuroimmune pharmacology and therapeutics.
