Immunomodulatory Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

As an understanding of the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) grows, in particular in those immune-related, novel therapeutic approaches have significantly improved the outcome for MS in the last decades. Rapid progress in the discovery of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) has been made in more recent years: among the total number of 21 DMTs approved since 1993, only nine were present in the market in 2012; eight new ones have been approved since 2017. More novel approaches have been tested in preclinical and clinical trials with the goal of significantly enhancing the therapeutic efficacy and safety profile for patients with MS.
