Conceptualization and Contextualization of a Sociopolitical Debate in Early Childhood Education and Care: Multilingualism as Both a Resource and a Challenge

The historical effort to develop a monolingual habitus as a response to linguistic and cultural diversity in many countries such as Germany has failed to substantiate the creation of a national homogeneous reality (Gogolin, 2007), although, as is shown in this chapter, a plurilingual habitus is a common phenomenon among individuals all over the world that is receiving increased attention not only in research but also on a societal and policy level.
