Dreaming, Imagining, and Remembering

  • Sven Bernecker

摘要

The paper puts forward a criterion for distinguishing remembering from imagining and dreaming. The idea is that a state of imagining qualifies as remembering, not dreaming, if it is underwritten by a cognitive mechanism whose proper function it is to track the truth. The hallmark of states of dreaming is that they aim at something other than truth, such as verisimilitude or interestingness.
