Psychodiagnostic Assessment Through Virtual Reality

This chapter explores the transformative potential of virtual reality (VR) in psychodiagnostic assessment. It discusses the challenges and opportunities of adapting traditional paper-and-pencil tests to immersive VR environments. The chapter details the intricate process of adapting established psychodiagnostic tests to VR, addressing concerns about validity, reliability, and the preservation of essential test qualities. By navigating these complexities, it provides a comprehensive understanding of integrating traditional tests into VR. The inherent benefits and unique challenges of using VR for psychodiagnostic assessment are highlighted, emphasizing its value and versatility. VR is shown as a powerful tool that can create controlled, repeatable, and ecologically valid testing environments similar to real-world scenarios. Two case studies illustrate VR’s potential in psychodiagnostic assessment. The first case study demonstrates the administration of Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) in VR, highlighting its precision in capturing cognitive abilities. The second case study examines the administration of the Tower of London Test (TOL) in VR, showcasing the dynamic interplay between traditional assessment tools and VR’s interactive capabilities. These case studies underscore VR’s adaptability for assessing problem-solving and cognitive functions.
