Blockchain has captured the imagination of developers, entrepreneurs, libertarians, and businesses large and small and is becoming a household name that can conjure up mystifying images of cryptography, Bitcoin, and geek-tech. But it is nothing more than a method of accounting, by a public ledger, which uses voluntary participants, often referred to as “nodes,” to verify transactions. Because a blockchain relies on remote technology to verify and update the transactions registered on it, blockchain dispenses with the need for a single, centralized custodian with all of the information—like a bank, registrar, or other ledger keeper—to maintain records.
