Attraction to Japan: Transition in the Late Qing Dynasty

This chapter examines the attraction stage of China’s borrowing of Japanese vocational education. It first analyses the externalising potential that drew China to learn from Japanese vocational education by exploring the development of Japanese vocational education, followed by an examination of the specific impulses for China borrowing Japanese vocational education. Finally, the various programmes that the Chinese undertook to find transferable paradigms in these contexts are discussed.
