摘要

Imaging sensors mounted on satellites, spacecraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) acquire huge volumes of remotely sensed images of the Earth surface. The rich information contained in such images has been widely used in regional and global surveillance missions, driving remarkable achievements in a wide range of applications. Nevertheless, hardware technology limitations and other factors impose a trade-off between spatial and spectral resolution that has to be considered. This implies a serious limitation in many observational tasks due to the distortion of information caused by lower resolutions. Since super-resolution technology can produce a high-resolution image from low-resolution observations of the same scene, working efficiently at low cost, it has become a popular technology for remote sensing applications. In the next chapter, the advances of super-resolution in remote sensing are comprehensively reviewed, focusing on multi-image fusion strategies, as well as evaluation procedures and applications.
