The Embedded U.S. Air Force Behavioral Health Provider

This chapter explores the critical role of embedded behavioral health providers in optimizing the health and performance of U.S. Air Force (USAF) personnel. Informed by the scientific literature and real-world examples, the authors explore the multifaceted impact of behavioral health on physical health, deployment readiness, and occupational performance and how the USAF has implemented Integrated Operational Support (IOS) programs to embed behavioral health providers within line units and overcome barriers to prevent and mitigate these concerns. This chapter explores the roles and functions of various behavioral health providers and embedded specialty psychology positions within the USAF. This chapter is not an exhaustive review of all programs and roles of embedded USAF providers; rather, the authors elaborate on the key professional duties, training requirements, and challenges generally faced by embedded behavioral health providers across settings and conclude with recommendations for personnel serving in or curious about these roles. By examining the applications, challenges, and lessons learned for embedded behavioral health providers in the USAF, this chapter contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the integration of behavioral health within military operations, offering insights that apply across various organizational contexts.
