Hundreds of applicants apply for the coveted spots in a medical school. During the evaluation process, in answer to the question on life challenges, an applicant wrote about his identity as a gay man of color in a relatively conservative household. A faculty member, an older, White physician, believed this was a concerning response that would negatively impact the applicant’s success.
