Politics: The Problem of Definition

This critique of liberal democracy begins with a brief critical survey of the main theories and approaches to the study of politics, as developed largely in the twentieth century. While the review is not comprehensive, it is sufficient to make the case that the definition of politics continues to be a matter of wide contention. A brief synopsis of the problems in defining politics concludes the chapter, opening the door to an argued definition in Chap. 3 .
