IoT: A Case Study in Nigeria

The IoT is a paradigm shift swiftly expanding, revolutionizing how technological items and systems interact and communicate. In its most fundamental form, the IoT is a network of linked physical devices, automobiles, appliances, and other items equipped with sensors, software, and network connections. This endows these objects with the ability to gather and share data (Ali et al. in IEEE Access 8:184,664–184,687, 2020). This interconnection attempts to create a more responsive and automated world in which the digital and physical domains intersect to enhance numerous elements of day-to-day living. The IoT may be traced back to the latter half of the twentieth century when the idea of incorporating sensors into equipment to facilitate communication was first conceived (Alharbi et al. in Int. J. Comput. Sci. Issues 15:36–41, 2018). On the other hand, it acquired much impetus in the early twenty-first century due to developments in wireless technology, the widespread availability of the internet, and the research and development of inexpensive sensors.
