Rethinking Interregionalism

  • Roberto Dominguez

摘要

This chapter examines the global context and the key concepts that elucidate the discussions around interregionalism. Unlike the European Union, Latin America has established other counterparts beyond CELAC, such as regional groups like MERCOSUR or CARIFORUM. Due to CELAC’s limited institutional development and internal division, it is challenging to establish a unified and strong position in negotiations with the EU. Therefore, the involvement of state actors and subregions plays a critical role in inter-regionalism. Based on the summit bi-regional mechanism, the EU-subregional arrangements, and the EU relationship with individual Latin American countries, the concept of modularity can be comprehensive for including the nature of the EU-Latin American relations.
