“To Me, Art is the Main Project, not a Tool”—Teaching Artists’ Aesthetic Musings on Global Science Opera

Behind the internet phenomenon Global Science Opera (GSO) lies a collaboration between science teachers and teaching artists, aiming at transdisciplinarity. The chapter focuses on teaching artists’ feelings of not being seen and heard in GSO, claiming the artistic subjects be treated mainly as a pedagogic vehicle for motivating pupils’ interest in science. The interviewed teaching artists seem to avoid confrontation with science experts in GSO by focussing on other possible project aspects, mainly pupils’ creative efforts and the global aspects of GSO. The chapter is grounded on interviews with GSO teaching artists, analysed narratively and dramaturgically and re-storied as drama. Analytically, we shaped stories of teaching artists in GSO into a short opera. On the basis of emerging themes, we created three acts, overture, conflict, and resurrection, re-storying and grouping interview themes as a creative, artful, and practice-near approach to methodology, relating to opera as an artform.
