Development can no longer be interpreted as economic growth, but economic forces continuously change the environment in which development is supposed to take place and in many cases constraint it. What is the interaction among the two aspects? This is perhaps the largest question we try to address in this book, but it is not the only one. If development is not just economic growth, what else? And poverty? The development of whom and for whom? Human beings, communities, countries? Where to start the investigation? And what are the possible causes of and the constraints to development? Natural resources? Population? Good/bad governance? Why has Southeast Asia grown while Latin America and Africa are subject to frequent crises?
