Introduction

This chapter introduces the field of nano optics. Emphasizing the historical significance of understanding and controlling light, we discuss the key discoveries that consolidated the modern theories of light, matter, and the interaction thereof, and motivated the passage from classical to nano optics. The chapter outlines the main topics addressed in this thesis, placing them in context within the broader scope of the field.
