Skull Base Tumors

This chapter provides an in-depth look at skull base tumors, specifically olfactory neuroblastoma, chordoma, chondrosarcoma, and jugulotympanic paraganglioma. It discusses their typical clinical manifestations, key prognostic and predictive factors, diagnostic imaging characteristics, and the comprehensive management of these conditions through various treatment modalities. We have emphasized the role of advanced radiotherapy techniques such as image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT), and proton beam therapy to minimize the toxicity on organs at risk located near the skull base. The chapter’s primary objective was to strike a balance between effectively treating the tumor and preserving the surrounding critical structures by delivering precise radiation doses within acceptable limits. It also details specific treatment strategies for each tumor type, highlighting the necessity of radiotherapy in multimodal treatment plans, whether as an adjunct to surgery or as a definitive approach when surgical options are limited or carry a high risk of morbidity.
