Biotechnological Innovations in Urban Forestry: Adapting and Mitigating Climate Change and Environmental Pollution

Urbanization has placed significant anthropogenic pressure on environmental health, impacting forests and green spaces. As cities confront the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, urban forestry becomes increasingly vital. This chapter examines the integration of biotechnology in urban forestry to enhance the sustainability and resilience of urban environments. Biotechnological approaches provide innovative solutions for mitigating environmental stresses, improving air and water quality, and promoting biodiversity conservation. The key strategies discussed include the genetic modification of trees, DNA storage technology, RNA interference, biomimicry, phytoremediation, biodiversity assessment, precision tree farming, rhizosphere engineering, and bio-based materials. Policy recommendations for incorporating biotech-driven solutions into urban planning frameworks are also highlighted. Leveraging biotechnology interventions may guide urban planners and policymakers to develop more sustainable, greener, and resilient urban landscapes, fostering healthier environments and improving residents’ quality of life.
