摘要

Rapid urbanization has profoundly impacted cities worldwide in recent years, presenting significant challenges for their microclimates. The migration of populations from rural to urban areas has led to the loss of natural vegetation and degradation of urban ecosystems, resulting in a phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Higher temperatures in urban areas characterize this effect compared to surrounding rural regions. Consequently, urban communities face many environmental issues, including poor air quality, acid rain, smog, flooding, landslides, and a lack of recreational spaces, threatening residents’ health and well-being. The projected effects of climate change and continued urbanization are expected to exacerbate the UHI effect and its associated problems, highlighting the urgent need for climate-conscious urban planning. Urban greening emerges as a nature-based solution to enhance quality of life, preserve biodiversity, and bolster climate resilience. Urban forests, in particular, play a crucial role in the ecology of human habitats by regulating the urban microclimate and mitigating the impacts of UHI and climate change. Through processes such as evapotranspiration and shading, urban forests provide cooling, carbon storage, runoff reduction, and improved air quality. Additionally, they offer habitats for wildlife and serve as recreational areas for city dwellers, contributing to stress reduction and mental well-being. Addressing the multifaceted challenge of optimizing urban microclimates requires an integrated, multilevel, systematic approach. This entails developing and refining comprehensive research methodologies that combine field measurements with numerical simulations to better understand the role of urban forests in the sustainable development of cities. Effective planning and managing green spaces may maximize the ecosystem services urban forests provide, ultimately enhancing the resilience and livability of urban environments.
