Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for Lung Metastases

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has become an established treatment modality for both primary and secondary lung tumors. Numerous prospective clinical trials implementing single and multi-fraction regimens have demonstrated excellent local control (>80%) and minimal high-grade toxicities. Additionally, consolidative local ablative therapy in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has yielded improvements in progression-free survival and reduction in metastatic lesions. The implementation of systemic therapies in conjunction with SBRT has also expanded the role of SBRT in the treatment of oligoprogressive metastatic disease with the goal of prolonging the useful life of systemic therapies. The role of lung SBRT continues to be explored in various settings with an emphasis on refining patient selection and delivery techniques to maximize the therapeutic ratio.
