Aquaponics: A Case of Integrated Aquaculture with Total Water Reuse

Aquaponics presents an innovative approach to sustainable form of aquaculture, representing the ideal synergy between aquaculture and hydroponics. This chapter explores the integration of aquaculture and hydroponics in the context of aquaponics, focusing on its efficiency in water utilization. The system operates on a closed-loop principle, where fish rearing and plant cultivation coexist, creating a symbiotic relationship that maximizes resource efficiency. In aquaponics, fish waste serves as a nutrient source for plants, while plants act as natural filters, purifying the water for fish and also producing a valuable crop. This interdependence leads to a remarkable reduction in water waste compared to traditional agriculture methods. The concept of total water reuse is strictly connected with the sustainability of aquaponics, as water is almost completely recycled within the system, minimizing waste and environmental impact. This chapter describes the mechanisms of nutrient cycling within aquaponic setups, showing how fish excretions are readily absorbed by plants, promoting optimal growth without the need for additional fertilizers. Furthermore, it examines the diverse range of crops that can be utilized in aquaponic environments, showcasing their versatility and potential for production in conditions of water scarcity.
