Earthwater Resources: A Quantitative Evaluation and Future Challenges

Water, essential for life as we know it, is fundamental to the life cycle of all organisms and plays a key role in human health and ecology. Its distribution and management are increasingly crucial, especially considering the growing anthropogenic pressure on our planet, which has led to a range of issues, culminating in a global water crisis. Despite Earth’s high water availability, only a small fraction, 0.3%, is readily accessible freshwater, critical for human needs. Shallow groundwater and especially surface water are renewable and are recharged through natural processes such as precipitation and infiltration. These processes, along with evaporation and condensation, make up the hydrological cycle, which regulates the continuous flow of water on Earth. Sustainable water resource management requires a deep understanding of the hydrological cycle, and the dynamics and pathways of water to address the global water crisis, through urgent and innovative actions. Globally, water usage encompasses agriculture (69%), industry (19%), and domestic sectors (12%). Despite stabilized consumption in developed nations, emerging economies continue to escalate usage, with projections indicating a 1% annual increase globally. Moreover, freshwater faces multifaceted challenges, including climate change-induced disruptions, pollution, over-extraction, drought, salinization, and water network losses. Holistic approaches integrating science, technology, and cooperation are crucial to address these challenges. Sustainable practices like integrated water management and water reuse are imperative for conservation and availability increase. Efforts are vital to secure freshwater for future generations in a context of increasing stress and environmental changes.
