Data Acquisition in Digital Agriculture

The digitalization ofAgricultural data acquisition conventional field management practices has converted agricultureAgriculture to data-driven agricultureAgriculture, which leads to the more precise, timely, and cost-effective management of crops and livestock in diverse agricultural environments (including both indoor and outdoor). However, in data-driven agricultureAgriculture, acquiring field or farm data is one of the most challenging tasks and directly affects the overall efficiency of digital agricultureDigital agriculture systems. Reliable data collection of soil, crops, and field’s environment parameters i.e., temperature, humidity, light, water, air, greenhouse gases, etc. helps to improve the overall yield. These days the use of various digital technologies i.e., Electronic Identification Systems, RFIDRFID, Sensors, Smart Phones, and Static/Remote SensingRemote sensing platforms on the farm has enabled agriculturists to collect accurate and in-time field data. Two main characteristics of modern digital technologies i.e., object identification and detection of physical sensation help the collection of different types of agricultural data (Miorandi et al. Ad Hoc Netw 10:1497–1516, 2012; Raj and Raman, The internet of things: enabling technologies, platforms, and use cases. Auerbach Publications, 2017). Considering the significance of these two characteristics, the content of this Chapter includes the details regarding the components and functioning of various digital data acquisitionData acquisition systems that are being used in the agricultural context.
