Electrons and Atoms

In this chapter we analyze the quantum mechanics of the hydrogen atom by using the three-dimensional Schrödinger equation. We also introduce the spin of the electron, giving a rigorous theoretical justification in the basis of the Dirac equation. Finally, we discuss how the quantum energy levels of atoms are modified in the presence of an electric field (Stark effect) and of a magnetic field (Zeeman effect).
