Globalisation and Education Futures: Community Colleges/TVET Colleges Sector—Globalization and Goals

This book chapter examines the impetus for change that stems from educational borrowing and examines the influences that educational borrowing has had on this understudied Sector of tertiary education. The book chapter examines (1) what current educational borrowing practices are reforming the College Sector and (2) how do the narratives of neo-liberalism and post-colonialism interpret these changes. The book chapter concludes that the Colleges Sector provides opportunities through education to improve equity, diversity, and inclusion by enabling non-traditional and marginalized students access, that in turn builds on students’ capabilities to enable them to achieve equitable levels of success. The book chapter also examined educational borrowing through three lens: intent, practice, and unintended consequences. The intent to be part of the global economy demands new focus and applications that educational borrowing provides. Practice allows for the customization and connections to the local community that is grounded in the missions of the Sector. Finally unintended consequences perpetuate hegemonic patterns in which the Sector is invisibilized and in so doing are purposefully being kept out of the narrative for advancing societal change. The importance of the Colleges Sector is that they serve a near majority of all higher education students in each country. They respond to a rapidly changing job market and are the creators of global knowledge.
