Globalisation and Education Futures: I Still Like Ike: History Education as National Security

This book chapter examines the impact of globalisation on the economic and cultural landscapes of America, and its contribution to the societal insecurities that have and continue to polarize the United States. Opening with the story of Sputnik and its extraordinary influence on science education in America, the book chapter examines a connection between that moment and the many ways globalisation has changed American society and challenged notions of American exceptionalism. The book chapter critiques the ways schools—particularly history education and pedagogy—have been caught up in the middle of the culture war brought about by globalisation. The book chapter concludes with an examination of the need for historical inquiry and content to confront globalisation’s effects and to empower citizens to question, reform, and/or reject certain elements of globalization.
