Curriculum in the Global Culture: Globalisation, Inequality, and Ineffectual Educational Policy in South Africa

While the recommendations from The Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) resonate with neoliberal reforms elsewhere, what seems certain is that new alliances and networks for knowledge and skills sharing will be vying for attention to stimulate South Africa’s national development while other groups and entities will continue to assert the dangers of cultural marginalization brought about by globalisation, colonialism, and imperialism. An upskilled and knowledgeable teaching force is indispensable for turning the situation around and to building social cohesion. The provision of equal access to quality education is essential to curbing societal violence and conflict in South Africa. The book chapter argues that by equipping teachers with content knowledge and skills and viewing them as change agents, education policies will foster quality and social cohesion when they recognize diversity, engage representation, reconcile injustice, and redistribute wealth and resources.
