Globalisation and Higher Education: Integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence into Global Higher Educational Systems: Implications for Practice, Policy, and Research

This chapter aims to provide insights into the adoption of GenAI in global higher educational systems. The first section discusses some of the key challenges that current higher educational systems experience. The second section provides a concise overview of GenAI and its pedagogical affordances and limitations. The next section presents a thorough discussion on principles for integrating these tools into educational systems and their policy implication. This chapter concludes with potential directions for future research. It is important to note that this article mainly focuses on conversational GenAI (e.g., ChatGPT and Bard) for pedagogical purposes, excluding those GenAIs primarily designed for creating images, videos, and audios. Focusing specifically on conversational GenAI allows for a more targeted exploration of a distinct subset of AI applications.
