Adam Smith’s theory of society was founded by ordinary people on the ordinary day-to-day rules we create and follow in our ordinary neighborly interactions. Out of feeling a debt of gratitude, we return heartfelt favors done for us; out of feelings of resentment from improperly motivated hurtful actions done to us we punish and deter harmful actions. These constitute the foundation of social exchange, in orderly communities and free constitutional nations. These interactions extended naturally in antiquity to economic exchange long before governments and writing.
