This chapter focuses on summarizing and reviewing recent literature evaluating common pain managementPain management strategies employed by Enhanced Recovery After SurgeryEnhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) (ERAS) protocols. ERAS protocols that promote effective pain managementPain management focus on the use of multimodal analgesiaMultimodal analgesia methods and the implementation of nerve blocks to reduce painPain and opioidOpioids consumption in the postoperative setting. Recent literature review shows particularly strong support for the incorporation of perioperativePerioperative administration of Cox-inhibitors in combination with NSAIDs, glucocorticoids, and central a-2 agonists, as well as the incorporation of an appropriate nerve block. Multimodal analgesiaMultimodal analgesia, in addition to administration of a neural blockNeural block, are well established methods that serve the goal of reducing postoperative painPostoperative pain, opioidOpioids consumption, and postoperative nausea and vomiting.
