Policy Intervention, Climate Change, and Sustainable Livelihoods: An Impact Study of Coastal Bangladesh

  • K. M. Kabirul Islam

摘要

This chapter examines how government policy interventions affect the sustainable livelihoods of climate change victims in two coastal subdistricts of Bangladesh, using Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16. This study employed a mixed methods research strategy, incorporating qualitative and quantitative data gathered through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and surveys with key informants. The study aimed to investigate how social safety net initiatives affect vulnerability reduction and sustainable livelihood promotion among impoverished cyclone and storm surge survivors. The text also proposes several policy implications for attaining SDGs 3, 8, 10, and 16. The results showed a restricted yet essential impact of the interventions on diet, health, and temporary relief. Without specific programs focused on capacity building and income generation for those impacted by cyclones in the coastal region, these initiatives alone are insufficient to guarantee sustainable livelihoods for the impoverished population of coastal Bangladesh.
