Peace Education as a Non-traditional Disruptor

Hate has come to endure as a significant non-traditional threat to security. Not typically military in nature, hate propels the re-entrenching of systemic and structural violence in the formula of us-versus-them. From WhatsApp forwards to outright propaganda based news production, there is very little room for nuance in dialogue, which has produced a culture of hate. As a result, divisiveness continues to proliferate. Hate has also known to be a precursor to atrocity crimes ( https://www.un.org/press/en/2019/pi2264.doc.htm ), produce intergenerational trauma, and create deep divisions in society. This paper looks at hate as a non-traditional security threat, given that it does not always produce military threats. As a counter, it proposes the institution of peace education as a non-traditional disruptor. The main objectives of this study are to (a) acknowledge and define hate as a non-traditional security disruptor with long-standing consequences of a negative kind and (b) present peace education as non-traditional disruptor and solution to hate.
